A car left the coastbound M20 between junctions 8 and 9 at 5.56am on Wednesday and caught fire. Its one occupant died. Kent Police want dashcam footage.
One person has died after a car left the coastbound M20 between junctions 8 and 9 early on Wednesday morning and caught fire. Kent Police is asking for dashcam footage.
The force says a black VW Polo was travelling coastbound at 5.56am on Wednesday 23 September 2026 when it left the motorway and went down an embankment on the nearside. Emergency services put out a fire at the scene. The car’s only occupant was confirmed dead (Kent Police, fatal collision on the M20 near Ashford, published 15:34 on 23 September 2026).
Enquiries are underway to identify the person’s next of kin, the force says. It has released no other detail about them.
What Kent Police has said
The statement is short, and it is the only first-party account published so far. In full, it records:
- a black VW Polo on the coastbound carriageway between junctions 8 and 9
- the time as 5.56am on Wednesday 23 September 2026
- the car leaving the motorway and going down an embankment on the nearside
- a fire at the scene, extinguished by emergency services
- one occupant, confirmed deceased, with next-of-kin enquiries continuing
- the carriageway closed while the Serious Collision Investigation Unit completed its work
Officers want to hear from anyone who saw the collision, and from anyone who saw the car before it. The reference is RY/DH/075/26.
The force has not given a more precise location than “between junctions 8 and 9”. That stretch runs from Hollingbourne, in Maidstone borough, past Charing and Hothfield and down to junction 9 at Ashford North, so part of it is outside this borough. The public upload page Kent Police set up for the footage is titled “fatal RTC M20 coastbound near junction 9”, which places it at the Ashford end.
Nothing about the reopening has been published on National Highways’ own live traffic pages, which carry current incidents only. Kent Fire and Rescue Service has not published an incident page for the fire; it says the incidents on its site are a sample rather than a full log.
The stretch’s own record, and why 2025 stands out
Road deaths are one of the few big local stories where the police.uk crime data we normally use gives nothing at all. Road casualties are not in it. The Department for Transport’s STATS19 collision file is, and it can be read for this borough alone.
It records 53 injury collisions on the M20 inside Ashford borough between 2021 and 2025, in which 81 people were hurt. Two of the 53 were collisions in which someone was killed. Both were in 2025.
The two fatal collisions in the file were:
- 14 February 2025 at 10.19pm, two vehicles, on the same J8 to J9 stretch, in darkness on an unlit length of motorway
- 5 June 2025 at 3.05pm, a single vehicle, in daylight, close to junction 9
Three further points from the same file are worth setting beside Wednesday’s collision:
- 14 of the 53 involved a single vehicle, as this one did
- 10 of the 53 were recorded between 4am and 8am, the window this one falls in
- the M20 accounts for 53 of the 1,330 injury collisions recorded across the whole borough in those five years, in which 1,862 people were hurt
STATS19 counts only collisions reported to the police in which somebody was injured, so damage-only crashes are missing from every figure above, and the most recent year is revised later. The 2026 figures are not published yet, so Wednesday’s collision is not in any of these counts.
A second appeal on the same coastbound stretch in nine days
This is the second Kent Police witness appeal for the coastbound carriageway between junctions 8 and 9 this month.
On 17 September the force appealed over a collision there shortly after 11pm on Monday 14 September. An unmarked patrol car, a blue Skoda Octavia, collided with a blue Nissan Qashqai travelling in the same direction. The police car had its lights and siren on and the officer was driving to an emergency call about a fatal collision at Tilmanstone, near Deal.
No serious injuries were reported. The three people in the Qashqai were taken to hospital as a precaution. Officers are still trying to trace the driver of a lorry with a white trailer, which was reported to be in lane 1 while the collision happened in lane 2. The force headlined that one “near Ashford” and opened it “near Charing”. Both describe the same few miles of road.
What it means for you
- If you drove the coastbound M20 between junctions 8 and 9 before 6am on Wednesday, Kent Police wants your dashcam footage. So does anyone with private CCTV overlooking the road.
- Footage goes to the force’s own upload page for this collision. It is the route the force asked for, and it is quicker than ringing.

- Dashcams overwrite. Most loop after a few days, so take the file off the camera now if you were on that road, rather than when the force asks again.
- The carriageway was closed for the investigation and the force describes that work as completed. We have not been able to confirm a reopening time from a first-party source, so check our Ashford roadworks and travel page before setting off.
- The person who died has not been identified publicly and no age, sex or home town has been released. We will not publish any of that before Kent Police does.
