The market runs 19 to 22 November 2026, down from ten days. After a survey where 483 of 614 residents called last year too long, that matters. Times still TBC.

The Tenterden Christmas Market runs Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 November 2026 on Tenterden High Street, organised by Zoom Events and free to attend (zoomevents.co.uk). Four days, not ten. That is the single most important fact about this year’s market, and it is a direct answer to what residents said about the last one.

Why four days is the story

Tenterden Town Council surveyed the town after the 2025 market and published the results in January 2026. The market had been stretched to ten days, running 14 to 23 November 2025, with the first week on the High Street between Ozgur’s restaurant and Station Road and the final weekend expanding into East Cross (KentOnline, 8 November 2025).

The residents and visitors survey drew 610 responses, of which 571 had attended. (The overview page says 610; the individual questions each total 614, so treat the headline count as approximate.) The numbers are not ambiguous:

Respondents were overwhelmingly local: 441 were Tenterden or St Michael’s residents and 146 were visitors from local villages, with 57% giving a TN30 postcode. On purchases, 271 said they attended but bought nothing, 175 bought only from High Street shops and 40 bought only from market stalls.

Among those who live on or near the High Street, 136 reported parking issues, 85 raised environmental concerns such as cooking smells, 69 cited access to their property and 46 noise. Ninety-one reported no issues at all.

Read against that, a four-day market in 2026 is close to what the largest group asked for.

One correction worth noting, because it appears on the council’s own page: the news item announcing the survey results describes the market as “held from 14th to 23rd December 2025”. The survey document behind it labels its own attendance options “First weekend (14-16 November)”, “Mid-week (17-20 November)” and “Second weekend (21-23 November)”. November is the correct month.

What the town council can and cannot do

The council used the same news item to correct a widespread assumption. It says plainly that it has no legal power to stop an event held on Tenterden High Street or any public highway. It can only refuse events on land it owns, which is the Tenterden Recreation Ground, the Football Pitch and St Michael’s Recreation Ground. What it can do is feed in views on health and safety, alongside the authorities that handle highway safety, licensing and permits.

For 2026 it said it is “working extremely hard to secure good relations with any event organisers”, will share both survey results with them, and will engage “very closely with the organiser to ensure that the Market will be Tenterden relevant and Christmas related” (tenterdentowncouncil.gov.uk).

The lights, the tree and everything else that weekend

The market is the anchor, but most of what happens that weekend is run by other people. From the town’s own event listing:

  • Town Hall Christmas light switch-on, Friday 20 November 2026. The town council has said it is looking forward to holding its official lighting of the town’s Christmas tree in front of the Town Hall, now that the Town Hall has reopened.
  • The High Street Christmas lights are on daily from about 3pm to 10pm, through to twelfth night, and are free. The council lights most of the High Street trees, key trees in the central High Street, trees at the Recreation Ground, the Coombe Lane display, the West Cross and Fat Ox Green trees and the East Cross Gardens arrangement.
  • Children’s rides, street food and live music on the High Street.
  • Christmas Craft Fair in the Woolpack Barn.
  • Tenterden Rotary Club serving mulled wine in Sayers Lane.
  • St Mildred’s Church Christmas Tree Festival at the Zion Baptist Church.
  • The Christmas tree at the White Lion lit up.

Road restrictions and parking

The market’s own listing sets out the traffic arrangements, and they are restrictions rather than a full closure:

  • A 20mph speed limit along Tenterden High Street.
  • An official one-way system for Bridewell Lane and Highbury Lane.
  • Laybys closed in their entirety: on the A28 High Street outside numbers 106-108, outside numbers 88a-94, and at East Cross outside numbers 1-7.

Parking is from the town centre car parks. Bridewell Lane is free after 6pm and free all day on Sundays, which makes the Sunday of the market the cheapest day to drive in. Given that 136 residents flagged parking in the survey, arriving early or on foot is the sensible plan.
