No trains run on Christmas Day, and most operators run none on 26 December. Last year's final train to Ashford from St Pancras left at 21.07 on Christmas Eve.
The rail industry has set the shape of Christmas 2026 but not the detail. National Rail says its festive period runs from Thursday 24 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027, that there will be no trains anywhere on Christmas Day, and that most operators will run none on Saturday 26 December. Southeastern’s own plan for Ashford’s lines is not out yet. Until it is, last year’s plan is the best guide to how the week works, and it is set out below with the times for Ashford’s stations.
The quick answer
There are no National Rail trains on Friday 25 December 2026, and most operators will run none on Saturday 26 December (National Rail). Operator detail is due “from the beginning of October”. Last Christmas Eve the last train to Ashford International left St Pancras at 21.07, Charing Cross at 21.29 and Victoria at 20.55, and Southeastern ran nothing after about 22.00.
What is confirmed for 2026
National Rail’s Christmas and New Year page for 2026/27, read on 25 September 2026, says:
- The festive period covers Thursday 24 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027 inclusive.
- Friday 25 December: “there will be no National Rail services on Christmas Day”.
- Saturday 26 December: “most train operators will have no service”.
- Information about each train company’s services “will start being added to the pages from the beginning of October onwards”.
The only engineering work it names so far is at Birmingham New Street, from 24 to 28 December. Nothing is listed yet for Kent, High Speed 1 or Ashford.
How last Christmas worked on Southeastern
Southeastern’s Christmas and New Year services page still shows the 2025/26 plan. A revised timetable ran from Saturday 20 December to Sunday 4 January, and the parts that touched Ashford were these:
- Monday 22 to Wednesday 24 December: all routes open on a Saturday timetable, with extra trains on some routes.
- Christmas Eve: trains finished early, “with no trains running after approximately 22:00”.
- Christmas Day and Boxing Day: “No Southeastern trains will run.”
- 27 to 31 December: no Southeastern trains at London Victoria because of engineering work, with trains diverted to Cannon Street. Off-peak fares applied all day on 29, 30 and 31 December, except Travelcards and journeys wholly inside the London Travelcard area.
- New Year’s Eve: extra late trains ran from Charing Cross, Cannon Street and London Bridge after midnight.
- New Year’s Day: Charing Cross, Cannon Street and Waterloo East were shut, with most trains going to Victoria instead, and buses replaced trains between Sevenoaks and Ashford via Maidstone East. That is the Charing, Lenham and Hothfield line.
- 2 to 4 January: Charing Cross and Waterloo East stayed shut, with most trains diverted to Victoria.

Trains from Charing Cross call at Waterloo East three minutes later and London Bridge nine minutes later. The PDF covers direct trains only; other journeys may be possible by changing.
Ham Street and Appledore are on the Marshlink line to Hastings, which Southern runs. Its Christmas page refused our request on 25 September, so we have no times for those two stations yet.

Free Christmas parking in Ashford and Tenterden
Ashford Borough Council has not yet announced any free parking for Christmas 2026. Last year it announced on 13 November 2025 that every council-owned car park in Ashford and Tenterden was free all day on Saturday 6, Sunday 7, Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 December (Ashford Borough Council, archived). The offer covered ten Ashford car parks, including Edinburgh Road multi-storey, Elwick Place, Vicarage Lane and Station Road, and all four in Tenterden, including Bridewell Lane and the Recreation Ground.
One thing has changed since. Elwick Place’s free-after-3pm offer ends on 1 November 2026, and Cabinet has put the wider January price rises back to its 8 October meeting (our report). Current tariffs are on our parking in Ashford page.
Getting to the Christmas events
Christmas Eve’s early finish matters mostly for evening plans in London. Locally, the dates to plan around are the Carnival of the Baubles on Saturday 21 November, the Tenterden Christmas market from 19 to 22 November, and the Kent and East Sussex Railway’s Santa Specials from Tenterden Town station.
